A Board Game without the Bored

At the beginning of the 2020 pandemic, when we all found out we would be staying home indefinitely, our family set a new schedule. The schedule included daily outside time, which has proved NECESSARY to our sanity! Two months in, however, we sometimes find ourselves in a rut, having found all the bugs, ridden all the scooters, and played all the things. Earlier this week, I knew it was bad when my four year old asked to spend his outdoor time playing on my phone.🤦🏻‍♀️ Today, to keep things fresh, we broke out the chalk and some board game cards to invent our own driveway game. The kids loved it!

I started by drawing a colored path with the chalk colors that matched our game cards. The kids worked on the castle at the end of our route. We made sure to add the "rainbow" spot at the end of the game to make sure that one color would not determine the set winner.

After we had the path mapped out, we got to add bridges connecting spots across from one another to make things more exciting. You may want to get even fancier and add character spots or places where the player is penalized.

To make the game more active, I added exercises to certain squares. At first, my kids thought the exercises were supposed to be a penalty, but they quickly realized it made the game much more active and fun!

When a player lands on an exercise square, he or she has to complete the exercise before they can move on in the game. This gives kids something to do while that are waiting for their siblings' turns. With older kids, it might be fun to assign exercises to each color and then label squares with rep numbers. You could also make the game progressively more intense by making the exercises cumulative.

This board game is nothing but boring. You can occupy hours of time (across DAYS if there is no rain in the forecast!) with this game. I hope your family enjoys it as much as we have!
